Lewis Scales Workshop

Wednesday, October 23, 2019, 8:00 AM

The Lewis Scales are an updated, streamlined, more user-friendly revision of the Timberlawn Foundation Couple and Family Evaluation Scales. At this workshop, Dr. John Gossett and Dr. Carlos Davis will give brief introductory presentations. Participants will be asked to use the Lewis Scales to evaluate a video recorded romantic couple discussion of two or more issues, disagreements, problems, or conflicts in their relationship. Immediately following these ratings, Dr. Gossett will lead up to an hour of interactive exploration of the similarities and differences between the participant’s ratings and those of Dr. Gossett. Two couples will be rated, and the ratings discussed in the 9 am to noon morning session, and, following a lunch break, two more couples will be rated in the 1 pm to 4 pm afternoon session. Learning Objectives:  1)    Attendees will learn the theoretical and empirical foundations of the new Lewis Couple and Family Evaluation Scales (Lewis Scales). 2)    Attendees will be informed of the crucial role of relationship conflict resolution styles for long-term relationship quality outcomes. 3)    Attendees will have hands-on experience using the Lewis Scales to evaluate four couple interaction video recordings of actual living-together romantic couples engaged in attempts at relationship problem-solving discussions. 4)    Attendees will obtain increased levels of competence and confidence in using the Lewis Scales in clinical, research and self-improvement activities. Presenters' Qualifications: John T. Gossett, Ph.D. joined the clinical staff of Timberlawn Psychiatric Hospital in 1965 and began conducting clinical research at Timberlawn Research Foundation in 1966. He served as Director of the Hospital’s Psychology Department from 1981 to 1992 and Director of the Research Foundation from 1988 to 1999. Dr. Gossett was a co-author of the Beavers Timberlawn Family Evaluation Scales in 1977, and the Timberlawn Foundation Couple and Family Evaluation Scales in 1997. He is first author of the new Lewis Scales. Carlos W. Davis, Jr., Ph.D. joined the staff of Timberlawn Hospital in 1985 and served as the Director of the Psychology Department from 1992 to 1997. He became the Director of the Timberlawn Research Foundation in 1999 and continues as the Director of the Lewis Foundation. Dr. Davis is second author of the five-author Lewis Scales.   Registrants will receive the Lewis Scales Packet which includes the Lewis Foundation Couple and Family Evaluation Scales booklet, the Rater Training Guide, and a Scoring Summary form. Attendees are asked to read these materials carefully before the workshop. In order to provide attendees with a representative set of four 21-minute couple interaction videos, allow time for the attendees to complete Lewis Scales ratings on each couple, and be able to explore those ratings in enough detail, the workshop will be fast-paced. Pre-workshop trial runs of this interactive format were conducted with doctoral and master’s degree mental health professionals, college students, and 12th grade high school students. Those who had carefully read the provided materials before making Lewis Scales ratings mastered the system quickly when rating couple interaction videos and found the exercises to be enjoyable learning experiences. Those who had not read the materials before viewing the videos had trouble keeping up and found the exercises difficult. If you are looking for a workshop where you sit and listen to six hours of lectures, that’s not this one. But if you’d like to join one where the introductory presentation is 30 minutes or less, followed by more than five hours of highly enjoyable learning and practicing a new set of observational skills that have every-day practical applications in both clinical and research settings, as well as in your own romantic couple relationship, that is this one. Accreditation Statement: Psychologists - This activity qualifies for Six (6) hours(s) of professional
